Grundy is pleased to be hosting WorkTownGhostTown from 8 – 25 May 2020.

WorkTownGhostTown is influenced by the The Mass-Observation study of Bolton and Blackpool (1937-40), known as the Worktown Project, in which Blackpool is heavily profiled as a site of mass tourism and pilgrimage for working people.

Throughout this period of lock down four locally based photographers – Dawn Mander, Kate Yates, Claire Walmsley Griffiths and Henry Iddon – have continued to work, where and when possible, to document Blackpool, this site of mass tourism and pilgrimage at a time of social distancing and travel restrictions.

WorkTownGhostTown is a digital archiving project and will be available to view through the gallery’s social media channels.

At the close of this initial phase of WorkTownGhostTown, the photographs will be collated, and Grundy’s curatorial staff will liaise with the artists to develop an exhibition which will be presented in the gallery’s Rotunda space during summer 2021.

WorkTownGhostTown was initiated by Tom Ireland as part of a curatorial secondment in 2020.
